Federation Square was buzzing with excitement on Saturday 4th May
as thousands flocked to witness the freshest talent in Bollywood dance at
the Telstra Bollywood Dance Competition. Contestants from Melbourne and
other states danced in front of superstar judges, Farah Khan and Kabir Khan
and very special guests Prabhudeva and Girish Kumar who were all in
Australia as part of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.
Dance groups were aged
under and over 13, with dance styles including Bollywood, modern dance
styles, traditional Bharat Natyam, Odissi, Kathak, as well as dances based
on traditional folk lore such as folk dances from the south of India,
Maharashtra, Orissa and Assam. Judges Kabir Khan and Farah Khan expressed
their amazement at the talent on show.
The Telstra Street Team
was out in full force, taking souvenir photos of spectators on the night and
handing out audience support cards. The contestants’ chances of winning were
increased through the Telstra audience vote, where the crowd voted for their
favourite dance act via an SMS voting poll on the night.
Congratulations to team
Shaimak whose Bollywood Masala Moves won the Telstra audience vote as well
as the judges vote at the Telstra Bollywood Dance Competition! Shaimak’s
unique performance replicated the dancing postures of various gods and
goddesses revered in India. The dance began by invoking the blessings of
Lord Ganesh, who removes all obstacles to ensure a smooth journey, and
Shaimak’s journey on the night certainly brought them to success!
Congratulations to all the contestants who participated at the Telstra
Bollywood Dance Competition 2013!
